Caring Dental - Pediatric Dental Emergencies
What could parents do in case of dental emergencies?

How much you can do at home usually depends on the case.
If your child has just a toothache, try rinsing the mouth with warm water to clean it, then try flossing to remove any food trapped between teeth.
If it is still hurting, contact your pediatric dentist.
If your baby cracked a tooth, immediately rinse their mouth with warm water, clean it out, then use an ice-pack on the area to prevent swelling, and go to the dentist as soon as you can.
Do the same steps if your child bit their lips or tongue.
If your child cracked a tooth by a hit, a fall, or any trauma, first be sure that they do not have another serious injury, then make sure to rinse with warm water and clean up the blood if found, use a cold compressor and immediately visit your dentist.
If the fallen tooth is permanent, do not forget to place it in milk or any approved dental preservation product and take it with you to the dentist.
If there is something trapped between their teeth, try to get rid of it by gentle flossing.
Simple flossing will do the job, but make sure not to use any sharp or pointed instrument that could hurt them.
If it does not help, visit your dentist as soon as possible.
If you suspect that your child broke their jaw, try to relieve the swelling by using cold compresses and immediately go to your child’s dentist or a hospital’s emergency department.

How to avoid dental emergencies?

• It’s best to make your child wear a mouthguard or a helmet when participating in sports or other outdoor activities.
• Teach your child to avoid using their teeth to cut or open things and carefully use appropriate tools (scissors) under the supervision of adults.
• Advise your kid not to run around with objects in their mouth (toothbrushes, pencils, lollipops, etc.)
• Make sure you keep your child away from dangerous areas (stairways and glass doors, for example) while playing, or make sure to block them.
• To keep your teeth clean, healthy, and strong, make sure to keep up with your regular dental check-ups every six months.
